Megan gets so excited when she is playing that she often hurts herself because she hits herself, hard, with the toy in her hand. Sometimes she scratches herself on her toys.
Today she whacked her eye on her crib. I rescheduled her 1-year photos from Wednesday to tomorrow because she had a big scratch on her nose that I didn't want in her photos. Well, now she might have a black eye. I guess they will be a true reflection of how rough she is on herself right now.

Secret Clapping
We have been waiting for Megan to clap her hands. She has done it with a toy in her hand on several occassions but I haven't seen her do it with just her hands. Will walked in her room a couple of days ago and saw her clapping her hands while she was playing.
I was doing this blog entry and looked over and Megan was clapping her hands.
Such a cutie.

She needs a breeze while she sleeps
Megan does some of the cutest things while she sleeps. We have so many pictures of crazy positions, antics with the blanket, etc.
Well a couple of days ago she started something new. She has started sleeping on her knees - not laying down on them - actually propped up on them. I could fit both hands under her there is so much room.
She wakes up with red knees but I guess maybe her tummy is cooler.
Now to get her to use her knees when she is awake.

She signed her first word
This morning, for the first time, Megan signed a word. She recognizes the signs that we do with her but she has never done the sign with us.
After Megan finishes her bottle I do the sign for eat/food and ask her if she wants some food. She usually gets VERY excited and smiles, blows kisses and waves her arms. This morning she got excited and then did the sign for food. Will & I both cheered for her.

Last appointment with Darlene
Yesterday Megan had her last appointment with the developmental therapist named Darlene who has been seeing her once a month since she was 3 months old. We will be transferring to a new therapist after we move because we are changing counties.
Basically Darlene comes to our house and plays with Megan for 45 minutes or so while she chats with me about the progress Megan has made over the past month. Yesterday Will worked from home so that he could be at the appointment so that he could get Megan to "talk" because she is sooooo quiet when the therapist is around.
Well, Megan did amazing at her last appointment. The therapist couldn't stop gushing over how far she has come in the last 3 weeks. Darlene has never had any concern over Megan's abilities - just said that she is progressing and that is what counts and the fact that she is taking is slow is fine, that a lot of babies do that. Well, Megan must have decided that she needed to show her true colors on the last visit because she rocked it.
She sat for 20+ minutes by herself and played with every toy Darlene gave her, even when she made her reach for them. She laughed for her, smiled at her, looked her in the face, etc -- all things she has done for me/Will for months now, but things she wouldn't do for Darlene prior to yesterday.
Way to finish up with flying colors little one!

Adventures with the baby sitter
We had a date night tonight so Megan hung out with Jen, our sitter. Jen has only had to feed Megan on two occasions- the first time was a couple of weeks ago when we had a date night.
Megan had recently had shots and she wasn't eating well so we warned her it might be difficult to get her to take her bottle. When we got home Megan wouldn't eat for Jen but just played with the bottle - something she had stopped doing with us some time ago. When we got home Will gave Megan her bottle and she ate it just fine.
Last night we told Jen that Megan was back to her normal routine and was eating fine and told her how to handle it if Megan tried to play with the bottle. When we got home Jen was "upset" because Megan wouldn't take the bottle from her - she wasn't even slightly interested. I did fail to tell Jen that she ate A LOT for dinner and that she might not want the bottle. Will did manage to get her to eat about 2 ounces I think. I felt bad.
So this weekend Jen will be watching Megan while we spend some time at the new house getting measurements, determining what all we want to do it before we move in. She may get another chance to feed Megan, not only her bottle, but actual food. This should be fun.
Megan does love her though - when we got home I had her lay Megan down beside her so I could try to get her to take the bottle and Megan reached out and grabbed her hand just like she does ours. So very sweet.

Salad Bar
We took Megan out to eat with us tonight at a local salad bar. She ate the following items(all for the first time): zucchini, yellow squash, cucumber, mushroom, spinach pasta, pickled beet and macaroni-n-cheese.
She loved everything we fed her. She would get so excited after she finished what was in her mouth because she knew something else was coming next. Such a cute little eater.
I gave her hard-boiled egg the other day and she didn't care for it. Will need to try scrambled eggs soon.

Ranier Cherries
Will loves Ranier cherries. I had not tried them prior to this morning - man they are like a spoonful of sugar; no wonder he likes them.
He decided to share some with Megan this morning. She, of course, ate them up. Yummy, sugary cherries.

First time in the sandbox
We took Megan to the playground today to play on the swings and to experience the sandbox for the first time.
Will dug out a little hole in the sand and built up about a 2" back on the hole to help her sit up. She sat there and played in the sand with Will for 7 minutes. He buried her feet in the sand and played with the shovel and rake and she grabbed handfuls of sand out of his hand.
After she was all done I was cleaning the sand off of her and she laughed and laughed as I tried to get it from between her toes.

New trick
Yesterday during dinner Megan used her finger to push food back into her mouth that was coming out while she was chewing. She usually tries to suck it back in or it falls out; but last night she would reach up and using one finger push the piece of food back in.

Toast
Megan had her first taste of toast this morning. She had 2 tiny pieces of Will's toast and she ate it up - no hesitation.
She is doing so great, figuring out how to eat anything I give her.

Highchair problems solved
Sometimes solutions to issues are simple and yet we don't think of them. I have been having issues with Megan's meals because she is too small to use the tray in her highchair and if I put her in the booster seat that has a tray she is so short I have a difficult time feeding her.
Lastnight a good friend suggested putting some towels underneath her in the highchair to raise her up -- 3 kitchen towels and perfecto! She is big enough to eat in her highchair.
This morning she had peaches and pears. She still doesn't like to touch the food - she doesn't like sticky/slimy things; but she opens wide for me to feed her. I am sure it won't be long and she will get over that just like she got over eating the chunks in the first place.

Great day out and about
We went to the farmer's market in Hillsborough today. It is very small but we enjoyed walking around outside. We went inside Home Depot to look at swing sets and Megan started fussing. It is funny she loves being out and about but for some reason doesn't like Home Depot. :-)
We went to a local Mexican place for lunch and she did amazing. She ate most of her bottle while sitting in her high chair and then polished off her veggies and fruit too. She is such a good little girl.

Almost done with 1-year shots
Megan had her last shots-only appointment today. She did remarkable as usual. She is such a big girl.
Her next appointment is with the pediatrician for her 1-year checkup and she will get her last 2 shots and finally be caught up. We do not regret delaying her shots at all but are happy that she will be caught up and can get on a normal schedule instead of having to go every 4 weeks for 2 shots.
She gave daddy a bubble blower for his birthday today and she is looking forward to playing with it with him later today.
