Big girl day!

Yesterday Megan had an appointment with an orthopedic doctor.  Her physical therapist thought it was a good idea to get her checked out by a doctor just to ensure that she hadn't missed something.  We all think that Megan's reluctance to get up and go has to do with her personality but better to be safe than sorry.

So, immediately after breakfast Megan and I headed to the doctor's office.  She did great hanging out in the stroller while I checked in and filled out paperwork.  Once we were put in a room I sat her on the exam table.  She liked sitting on the crinkly paper and the sound her feet made when she kicked them against the edge of the table.   We weren't alone in the room for more than 7-10 minutes and she was happily hanging out.

When the doctor entered the room she cocked her head to the side and scrunched her forehead while looking at him.  I said "it's not Dr. Fennell is it?" and she looked at me and smiled.  She was perplexed by this new guy.  He said hi and took a seat in front of Megan but out of reach.  I sat in a chair beside the exam table and kept my hand on Megan while I answered all of his questions.  Eventually it was time for him to examine Megan.

He asked her if he could see her feet and take off her shoes.  She didn't pull away from him, but she started doing her nervous ear thing so I held her hand and told her it was okay.  She handled it so well.  He took her shoes/inserts/socks off and put them on the table beside her.  At one point, after a few minutes she picked up one of her inserts and put it next to her foot to say "put this back on".  It was cute.

The doctor recommended an xray to rule out any issues with her bones so we were taken to another waiting room for that.  I sat her in the "big girl chair" beside me and we played and sang songs (the elderly lady in the room with us sang every song with me).  When they were ready for us we walked back to the xray room.

The xray techs were great, she let me hold Megan and spin her around to keep her laughing while they set everything up.  Then, I pulled Megan's pants down, laid her on the film, moved my hands and they took the xray.  It lasted about 10 seconds.  I talked to Megan the whole time and she just looked around at everything.  And then we were done.  Gotta love people who know how to do things with small children.

We went to another waiting room while they looked at the film and she sat in my lap and entertained the other people in the room.  I decided to strap her into the stroller at this point because I didn't want her getting restless and about 2 minutes later we were taken back to the room.  I left her in the stroller and we read a book while we waited.  The doctor returned and showed me her perfect xrays. Yay!

He wants to keep an eye on her, especially when she decides to start walking so he can monitor her inserts and change them as needed.  He was a very pleasant and kind doctor, very unlike most of the people who examine Megan.  I thanked him for that and he said he can't believe what people tell him other professionals say to them about their children.

Megan chowed down on her cheerios during the ride home and was as happy as could be.  She couldn't have done any better with the whole appointment, exam, etc.  I was so proud of her.  She had a great rest of the day too - doing things she hasn't done in a while, likely because she has been so tired from being up every night.
